Is #Data, Debt for your organisation? #EnergyAnalytics #EnergyProductivity

Couple of days back I recored my latest Podcast, which kind of touched upon the idea of having  definite #EnergyDataAnalytics (Data Analytics in general too) strategy which can lead to transformational change in the way an organisations wants to improve #EnergyProductivity.

This post is really about  questioning (reasoning) the current myths/practices that most organisations have in relation to their data strategy (Being from Energy Productivity space, ill focus around it)

  1. Been there, done that- Most organisations and Energy Managers in particular would certainly like to reason that they are doing enough with their data assets but thats not entirely true. Having an Energy Monitoring System (EMS) or an Energy Management Systems (EnMS) is one thing and having a definite #Energy data strategy is another thing.

    To be fair the ones who have the most successful or even evolving strategy, are the ones who would have tagged it along the overall digital transformation goals of the organisation.

  2. Can see it on my dashboard– Well the world has move much beyond dashboards, it’s time to move from real time data to onetime insights and call to actions. Significant amount of productive time (money as well) is lost in trying to interpret data points.

    Have an integrated system using #AI (algorithms for specific use case to mine data and generate specific insights) that enables your teams (energy managers, production managers) to collaborate better on insights and call to actions.

  3. Need investments to get started– If an organisation is really at the bottom of pyramid when it comes to the data landscape, its absolutely certain that investments would be required to get started with data acquisition etc.

    Idea is to maximise to whatever extent possible, overall value creation one could do from existing data assets. Being able to demonstrate a couple of PoCs (Proof of Concepts) or being able to solve even a few problem statements (getting close as well), can go a long way in influencing management to take decisions on #EDA strategy investments.

Why not to leave Industries behind in the #EnergyEfficiency conversation?

Yesterday I saw a twitter post from ACEEE that kind of spoke about how companies could do more on investing in #EnergyEfficiency. I have engaged in so many offline and online conversations around #EnergyEfficiency, often see that Industries get the last spot!

Without  a shadow of doubt the residential, commercial buildings and the “space cooling” markets are extremely relevant as they have direct connect with consumers, utilities (often state run) have it in their interest to manage the demand- supply situation. But spare a thought, globally industries contribute to around 36% of the total energy consumption.

Industrial #EnergyEfficiency becomes more important for emerging or developing economies who are into manufacturing of goods or delivering services that are energy intensive. Take the case of Bangladesh, Industries account for over 40% of the total energy consumption, out of which the Textile sector contributes to more than half of the consumption.

Completely understand that every narrative of selling #EnergyEfficiency is part of a bigger “narrative” which may or may not bear the same relevance for each country. I speak for emerging / developing economies, here is how policy makers and think thanks look to change the narrative on Industrial #EnergyEfficiency and make it work:-

  1. Industrial #EnergyEfficiency has direct connect with #EnergyProductivity, which is a better macro indicator when it comes to tracking economic output vis-a-vis energy consumed. #EnergyProductivity should become the default indicator for all energy performance assessments and target setting in Industries
  2. Have an Industrial policy that is forward looking, integrates aspects like Industry40, IIoT. A country may have the best of Energy Efficiency norms, but a policy that supports import of outdated equipments (linked to process) may not get them anywhere.
  3. Some of the sectors, especially in the Small Businesses (SME segment) (Foundry, Forging etc) have often had problems in taking up new technologies or processes that can help them have transformational change. Open up these challenges under Industry-Startup partnerships, let them solve the problem and deploy solution at scale.
  4. Foster sectoral-regional collaboration, create mechanisms in which insights could benefit the sector at large. Understand “sharing of Data” is a challenge, there are business models and use cases one could look at and attempt to overcome these challenges.

Emerging/ developing economies rely significantly on manufacturing as against to services. Any form of inefficieny has a direct link to macro socio-economic indicators of that country.

CAN- Compressed Air Network Optimisation Algorithm! #EnergyAnalytics #EEHub

Compressed Air is one of the forms of energy that finds use in most industries, in some industries like Textiles it contributes to significant portion of the overall energy consumption.

Compressed Air Networks i.e. multiple number of compressors operating in tandem, offer potential for optimisation and improve energy productivity CFM/KW by around 5%-7% (in some cases going as high as ~12%)

Multiple factors must be looked at while considering optimising the generation and distribution of Compressed Air and the overall network.

CAN- Compressed Air Network Optimisation Algorithm

Our Algorithm works on the operational data I.e. data from each of the compressor, operating behaviour and over a period suggests optimisation possibilities resulting in better utilisation of the network, correct operation settings, resulting in energy productivity gains.

Factors/Aspects considered by the algorithm:-

  1. Weather Conditions
  2. Set Points for each compressor
  3. Operational behaviour of each compressor under the influence of the network.
  4. Maintenance

Algorithm would be available on EE Hub, users could either purchase API calls or use the algorithm as DIY tool through our web based application EnView.


How can governments do more with (tons of) Industrial #EnergyEfficiency related Data?

Earlier this month we hosted India’s first Energy Data Analytics Summit in Delhi, where one of the discussions led to some people asking “What can governments do with (tons of) Industrial #EnergyEfficiency related Data?

This question to me has a lot of significance. Just as the way all Governments use Health, Economy, Inflation, Education related data for greater good (social and economical), why treat Industrial #EnergyEfficiency related data differently? While one may argue that there is no precedence, but given the age in which we are living, we are seeing use cases evolve every day.

In this blog i intend to initiate dialogue on two of the use cases for greater use of Industrial #EnergyEfficiency related data and who stands to gain and how?

  • Bench-marking

Hard to believe that most industries/sectors do not yet have correct bench-marking methodology/tools available.  I am using the term “tool” here because industrial processes have a lot of variables and hence one cannot have a “number”, but there is no excuse to have not been able to develop a “tool” yet.

Will the government make the tool? NO. But they can open up the data for other solution/service providers, let them develop applications on it. Innovation can foster.

Contrary to what many believe “opening up data” doesn’t mean that anonymity can’t be maintained, there is no need to share raw data, connected insights/indicators could do a lot of good straight away. Mix of qualitative and quantitative data (derived output from raw data) allows enough room for innovation.

  • Investment Trend & Success

Fact that many governments have been collecting data on Industrial #EnergyEfficiency for over a couple of decades, allows them to keep track of investment trends, returns being yielded, % increase in efficiency YoY, which sector does well and which is lagging etc?

Governance can be simplified drastically if data is put to use. Its happening everywhere, there is no reason why Industrial #EnergyEfficiency has to be ignored. Designing Industrial #EnergyEfficiency policy w/o data points is not worth it.

Some of the other use cases could be:

  • AI driven assistance in Measurement & Verification (Example: PAT Scheme in India currently relies on 100% human driven verification process)
  • Predicting performance, forecasting demand supply situations instruments linked to Energy Efficiency Projects ( White Certificates/ Energy Saving Certificates/ ESCerts (PAT Scheme))
